Ball valve
The Illustrated Guide to Mechanical Building Services, Third Edition (BG 31/2017), by David Bleicher, published by BSRIA in 2017, suggests that a ball valve is: ‘Used as an isolation valve on pipework typically up to 50 mm nominal bore. Located either side of fittings that require regular maintenance, and for isolating sections of pipework.’
Guide to Controls (BG 83/2023) written by John Marrow and published by BSRIA in June 2023, suggests that ball valves: ‘…are used in applications where pipe sizes are from 15 mm to 20 mm. They are used to control the flow of hot or chilled water in terminal or fan coil units. They operate by moving a ball-shaped insert within the valve body to open or close the valve. These valves can have characterised shaped ports or characterised balls to offer a linear flow characteristic. Higher pressures on these valves can be closed off by low torque actuators.’
